"ironic product placement is only ok if you take no money & beyond that give all the income to something ironic. like the Klan" - Amanda Palmer

Well.
I've been getting through the Evelyn Evelyn thing by listening to Dolls stuff and WKAP and reminding myself that it was before the shit hit the fan. And if I tried really hard, I could probably think of a reason that justify, or at least brush aside, that she said this. But. What makes her think this is ok? What makes anyone who claims that they are progressive and believe in equality and all that shite think its ok to even bring the KKK into a supposed intellectual discussion (be it about Lady Gaga or otherwise). It was uncalled for, it was hurtful and now Amanda Palmer is in that uberfun categorey with John Mayer where I can listen to about a minute of a song before I cringe and remember that the people who makes songs I'm fond of are actually utter arseholes. Ms. Palmer, all I request is that you stop being a jackass quite so loudly, so I don't have to struggle to separate you from your art.

In case you still aren't quite sure what's so bad about what she said, have a picture or two. (This is a journal entry containing pictures of Klan violence. That's your warning): http://sparkymonster.livejournal.com/389485.html.

Curiously, that's the only entry I've seen about it, even though it happened last night. Don't let Amanda Palmer off the hook now, guys.

Oh.

Fab.

I had already taken all her songs off my iPod because I was cringing the way you are, and...yeah, I'm not seeing them going back on anytime soon.

In theory, I think separating people from their art is fine, and lord knows I do it all the time--but only when I can ignore the shit the people have pulled. Often, this is easiest the author/artist/etc. is dead, or isn't often in the news and therefore I don't have much of an idea of what they're up to.

But someone asked me once why I can't read anything of Harlan Ellison's. They were surprised when I replied that it's because of that time he grabbed a woman's breast. Can't that be separated from his art? Sure it can, but that doesn't mean I can, or even want to, now that every time I think of the words "Harlan Ellison," I remember what he did. And when I hear Mayer's or AFP's music, the same thing happens. Their actions and words run through my head. For the time being, possibly forever, I am not able to separate the people from the art. Because I'm pissed at them. I don't want their art in my life right now--maybe not ever again. Not unless some shit changes.

...you know, I don't even understand what she's trying to say in that sentence. I keep running into a wall of "WTF?" I mean. Is she saying that we should give money to the Klan? Or that the Klan is ironic? Or is she making a joke about the Klan? I DON'T GET IT. Whatever it is, it's not clever or funny, nor does it have anything to do with PRODUCT PLACEMENT.

Also, "ironic"? The Klan are not coincidental or unexpected. Double don't-get-it and double not-funny. What the hell?

I RAMBLE BECAUSE I AM BOGGLED. :(

I TOO AM BOGGLED. I don't understand just which type of irony she's going for here, but no matter what you do. not. bring the fucking Clan into it, y'know?
